Urban Interns is a site for connecting small businesses with part-time job seekers and unpaid interns. They offer paid, unpaid, in-person, and virtual opportunities.
Urban Interns was founded by Lauren Porat and Cari Sommer in February of 2009.
The application is the first site completely dedicated to connecting paid and unpaid positions in small businesses with job seekers and others seeking internships in several large cities and online.
Users may search jobs or search for interns without registration, but to contact an intern or apply for a job, users must be registered.
The interface is very easy and intuitive. The layout is clean and appealing. For searches, whether seeking work or posting jobs, users choose the city they are located in or check the “any” box for virtual work, hours per week and general times of availability, minimum education level, industry, and desired tasks.
The list of industries includes basics, such as accounting, as well as salon/spa/fitness and more. The task list includes everything from research to “you wait – instead of me”. Users may add tasks and keywords to searches.
Search terms may be modified on the results page to refine the search criteria. Interns may apply via a link on the site and employers may view potential candidates’ information, send them a message, or view the feedback from other employers.
To register, users provide a username, email address, and password. They indicate whether they are an intern or employer and how they found Urban Interns.
Employers pay $39.95 per month for membership. This includes one job post for 30 days, unlimited candidate database access including resume viewing and communication through the platform. Interns do not have to pay to list their resume or contact employers about job listings, but they do have the option to “supercharge” their profile with a premium membership which highlights their listing for $12.95.
Both employers and job seekers can benefit from the resources provided by Urban Interns. The site is expanding to major cities and also has virtual jobs listed. Anyone interested should check periodically to see if their city has been included.
